Guess what movie I just watched again? A mostly accurate font inspired by the movie "Total Recall" (1990). Consider it an experiment in using the 2x vertical filter.

**2017 08-13 Update**  Taking advantage of the expanded brick-stacking minimums, I have modified the following glyphs: A a R r S s Z z 2 7 ? _ +

The diagonal leg of the R is still not quite correct; further attempts might be made in the future.

I have also removed the 2x vertical filtering.  We are back to good old 1x filtering now.

Another "Data 70" variant, this time from Konami's 1990 arcade version of Aliens. Note that a handful of characters are 7-8 pixels wide, which is also the reason for the slightly wider letterspacing of 2 pixels (as in the arcade game itself). Includes additional characters not found in the original game's tile set.

Recreation of the pixel font used in Toaplan's arcade classic "Snow Bros. - Nick & Tom" (1990). Slightly expanded with a few extra punctuation marks and special characters. The strange ":" and ";" present in the original characters have been retained.

Nintendo's "Super Mario World" (1990) on the SNES contains a maddening 5 pixel fonts. This is the recreation of the 7px tall font used for the game's message boxes and level names on the world map. UPDATE: in the game, the font has a 2px spacing to account for the outline. in this recreation, i opted to just go for a 1px spacing - if you do use it outlined, make sure to add the extra pixel for authenticity.

Update Sept. 2019: added some missing unused characters "?", "•", "(", ")" and fixed the incorrect "Q".

Nintendo's "Super Mario World" (1990) on the SNES contains a maddening 5 pixel fonts. This is the recreation of the two small, 6px tall variants used for the game menus, end-of-stage stats, and the end credits. These have been spread out across the upper- and lowercase. Note the reduced-size 5px tall numerals, and the copyright symbol used on the title screen. UPDATE: in the game, the font has a 2px spacing to account for the outline. in this recreation, i opted to just go for a 1px spacing - if you do use it outlined, make sure to add the extra pixel for authenticity.

Update Sept. 2019: fixed the incorrect "Q"

Recreation of the in-game pixel font from Tecmo's "Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos" (aka "Shadow Warriors II: The Dark Sword of Chaos", 1990) on the NES. This font is very similar to the alternate font from the original Ninja Gaiden (though in that game it was used during the animated "Tecmo Theatre" cutscenes), with some minor differences in the "C", "S", "1", "6", the copyright symbol and the roman numeral "II". In contrast, the in-game font from "Ninja Gaiden" is used here for the cutscenes instead. Only the characters present in the game's tile set have been included.
This is a clone of Ninja Gaiden (NES) (Alternate)

Recreation of the pixel font from Jaleco's "Saiyūki World II: Tenjōkai no Majin" (1990) on the NES, which was re-themed for the US market as "Whomp 'Em". A fairly standard font, but with a few nice quirks (particularly on the "X"). Only the characters present in the game's tile set have been included.

Recreation of the pixel font from Sega's "Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse" (1990) on the Sega Mega Drive.

This font includes a full set of hiragana and katakana characters. In the tile set, the dakuten and handakuten are separate tiles, positioned after the character they relate to. In this recreation, these characters are pre-combined into a single glyph.

Only the characters present in the game's tile set have been included.

Nintendo's "Super Mario World" (1990) on the SNES contains a maddening 5 pixel fonts. This is the recreation of the 12px tall font used in the end credits as well as for the in-game's bonus star counter. Note the the game's "MARIO/LUIGI START !" and "GAME OVER" seem to use yet another pixel font, this one 13px tall...which I'm NOT including here. UPDATE: in the game, the font has a 2px spacing to account for the outline. in this recreation, i opted to just go for a 1px spacing - if you do use it outlined, make sure to add the extra pixel for authenticity.

Recreation of the primary pixel font from Sunsoft's "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" (1990) on the NES, used primarily in the shop sequences.

This font contains an almost complete set of hiragana and katakana characters. In the game's tileset, the dakuten and handakuten are separate tiles, and positioned in the line above the character they relate to. In this recreation, these characters are pre-combined into a single glyph.

Apart from these, only the characters present in the game's tile set have been included.

With the exception of two minor additions, only the characters used in the game (and present in the ROM) have been included. In addition to regular characters, the game itself uses a series of special ligatures ("il", "ll", "li" and special combinations with the aprostrophe, like "I'") that are not included here for "semantic purity". Note also the special -1px spacing on the "T", "t" and "@" characters - this was done in order to avoid having all other characters lead with an empty pixel column and therefore keeping it compatible with my Nintendoid 1 and 2 generic fonts for NES.

Interestingly, it does not use the (fairly standard) font from the arcade version (1988) but - and something I only found out after I finished the recreation - actually uses the same font as the arcade version of Namco's "Dragon Saber" (1990) http://fontstruct.com/fontstructions/show/dragon_saber but with a more limited set of characters. Only the characters present in the game's tile set have been included.
